Shek O Beach

Take a day to relax, recharge and windsurf in this secluded sandy paradise away from the bustle of Hong Kong.

Shek O Beach is the perfect place to relax and enjoy outdoor activities outside the heavily urbanized areas of Hong Kong. Work on your tan on the pleasant sandy shorefront and try some of the beach’s watersports. In the evenings, explore Shek O village and find historical landmarks alongside seafood restaurants with fabulous views.

Though there are a few buildings and shops, Shek O beach is a world away from the constant movement and noise of the city and provides an excellent opportunity for a quiet nap or invigorating swim. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards by day, and the clean, generally calm waters here make it a great choice for families. Bring a book and a beach towel and give yourself some time to recharge.

Shek O beach provides plenty of outdoor pursuits for those who are looking. Rent a raft and paddle out to sea or walk around to Rocky Bay where the cliffs make excellent routes for sport climbing. Head north to Big Wave Bay to find one of Hong Kong’s best locations for both windsurfing and board surfing.

Bring your walking shoes and hike the Dragon’s Back trail through the Shek O Country Park. This scenic walk takes you through the cool shady forest of bamboo up to the open mountainside where you’ll find breathtaking views of the South China Sea and the islands surrounding the peninsula.

Take a moment to appreciate the quiet history of the Shek O village. This small town dates back over 200 years and is home to a number of historical landmarks worth visiting, such as the Tin Hau Temple, which was built in 1891.

After a busy day, cook up some burgers at the beachside barbecue area or choose a restaurant and enjoy fresh local seafood and great ocean views.

Shek O is easily accessible by public bus from Shau Kei Wan while the more energetic can hike there via the scenic Dragon's Back Trail.
