A landscape of sparkling lakes, green pine forests and secluded trails provides wonderful opportunities for hiking, biking and other outdoor pursuits.

Part of the Laponian World Heritage Site, Stora Sjöfallet National Park is an untouched landscape of flat plateaus dotted with trees, old pine forests, mountain massifs and dramatic ravines. Explore this rugged terrain on foot or as part of a bike tour in the summer. In the winter, head to the park for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

This park was established over a century ago to protect the incredible Stour Muorkkegårttje waterfall. The waterfall’s volume has reduced somewhat since being partially developed for hydro-power, but it remains an impressive site. Head to the modern Laponia Visitors Center on the southern side of the park to learn more about the significance of this stunning natural area.

Stora Sjofallet is dominated by the 6,900-foot (2,100-meter) high Áhkká mountain. This imposing mountain is nicknamed the “Queen of Lapland” for its 13 peaks and 10 glaciers, which appear to form a crown. Hike along part of the Kungsleden (King’s Trail), which passes through the eastern end of the park.

Kayak across the vast Lake Akkajaure, an man-made lake which divides the park in half. Notice the reflection of Áhkká’s dazzling peaks on the lake’s surface. On the banks of the lake, find Sami camps with huts that provide services to visitors. Warm up with a coffee or try a simple meal of traditional smoked fish. In the summer, cross the Stora Lulevatten lake by ferry to reach mountain station of STF Saltoluokta Fjällstation, which has traditional Swedish food and accommodation.

Gaze across the incredible landscape from the summit of Lulep Gierkav, which towers 3,737 feet (1,139 meters) high over the surrounding area. Try to spot local Sami shepherds herding reindeer, just as their ancestors have done for centuries.

In the winter, head to the park for snowmobiling, skiing and ice climbing. The Mountain Center offers equipment rentals, as well as guided tours.

Find Stora Sjöfallet in northwestern Sweden, near the Norwegian border. Reach the park by car from the nearby town of Porjus or take the bus from Gällivare.

Enjoy an invigorating outdoor adventure in one of the country’s most picturesque national parks.
