Spend the evening in this quaint square to appreciate the intriguing Flemish designs of its buildings and enjoy a few drinks.

An array of bars and restaurants make the Place des Héros the more animated of Arras’ two main squares. Both sprang from medieval markets. See the cobblestone plaza teeming with life in the evening, when its Flemish-style buildings are illuminated in golden light.

Marvel at the majestic structures, complete with arches, colonnades and Baroque features, surrounding the square. Most of these buildings were destroyed in World War I before being reconstructed to match their original design. Note the quaint ornaments, such as mermaid sculptures, that adorn the façades. Over the years, the square has preserved its charming appearance despite changes of owners and uses for the buildings.

Climb the Belfry for an excellent view of the tops of the market stalls decorating the square. Take photos of the plaza and its intriguing buildings with the Arras skyline in the distance. The Flemish structures are of Baroque style and were initially made of wood in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Relax at a café in the afternoon and stay into the late hours, when street performers create a buzz in the square. Enjoy a few cocktails or wine at one of the local bars and enjoy the energetic atmosphere in this historic plaza. Look around the market that occurs on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the square.

Venture into the underground passageways that link the square to its counterpart, the Grand’ Place. This network of tunnels was initially built in the 10th century and was later used for shelter and medical care during World War I. It has been open to the public for several decades.

The plaza was initially known as the Petite Place (Small Square) and was renamed in 1945 in honour of the members of the French Resistance who lost their lives during World War II.

The Place des Héros is a 5-minute walk southwest of the Grand’ Place in the heart of Arras. Follow the secret subterranean passageways linking the two plazas or use a bus from elsewhere in the city to bring you to the square.
