North Bay Railway is a complex with thrilling and innovative attractions alongside a historic miniature train network that chugs along Scarborough’s rugged coastline. Built over 80 years ago as a simple train line, the park now incorporates many other family activities.
Ride one of the four Hudson Clarke locomotives around Peasholm Park with views of its lake and the North Sea. Drive one of the historic trains alongside an instructor for an extraordinary experience. The course comprises a round trip from Peasholm Park Station to Scalby Mills.
Next to Peasholm Park Station is the Glass House Café. Enjoy snacks and refreshments, including pastries and tea. Explore the picturesque Northstead Manor Gardens that surround the café.
Aside from the railway, the park contains several exciting attractions. For a thrill, walk along the wooden steps and ropes suspended in the air on the Sky Trail. Watch your kids enjoying the two levels of this fun rope bridge.
Make a splash in the park’s lake with the vintage Water Chute, which is one of only three remaining in the United Kingdom. Appear to walk on water inside one of the Water Walkers hamster balls. Pedal boats of different shapes and sizes are available for rent.
Enjoy a pint of British ale at the Boatman’s Tavern, which is perhaps the smallest pub in the county of Yorkshire. Try some of the region’s excellent seafood at the Scampi Shack.
The railway was constructed in 1931 and covers a distance of less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) between Peasholm Park and Scalby Mills. Hear about its grand opening, when the town’s mayor drove the train wearing a cap and holding an oil can and a rag.
The various attractions have their own active hours, but most open from morning to late afternoon. There are fees for each individual ride. Scampi Shack, Boatman’s Tavern and lake activities close in winter.
Find the North Bay Railway at the southern end of North Bay Beach. It is in the northeastern part of Scarborough, near attractions such as the Scarborough Open Air Theatre and North Cliff Golf Club.
