Singapore's island playground just 800 metres from the mainland offers fun in the sun for all ages.

Just 15 minutes away from the city centre is Sentosa, an island packed full with entertainment options: here you will find world-class attractions, sea sports, golf and great restaurants and beaches. The name Sentosa means 'peace and tranquillity' in Malay, and while there are a few quiet spots, expect crowds of people looking for a fun day out.

Back in the 19th century, the island played an important role in the defence of Singapore and several forts were built. By the 1930s, the island was heavily fortified and during WWII, the island was a British military fortress. When the Japanese invaded and captured Singapore, the island became a prisoner of war camp. Sentosa's past is still much in evidence at Fort Siloso and Changi Museum.

In the 1970s, the government developed the island into a holiday resort for both local visitors and tourists alike. Over time, Sentosa's attractions have grown considerably and now there is something for everyone. If you catch a cable-car from Singapore to reach the island, you will land on one of the highest points on Sentosa, Imbiah Lookout. Here you can enjoy stunning views across the island and sea.

If you need some beach time, Sentosa enjoys two kilometres of protected beach with beautiful white sand and beachfront dining and bars. If you want more exercise, golfers should tee off at the Sentosa Golf Club and enjoy its 18-hole championship courses and luxury clubhouse.

The newest and biggest attraction on the island is Resorts World Sentosa Singapore. The integrated resort is the home of Universal Studios Singapore, one of Asia's most popular them parks, the luxury retail outlets of FestiveWalk, and the soon to open Marine Life Park.

You can reach the island via monorail or bus from the VivoCity Centre, by taxi or by catching the cable-car from Mount Faber or from the Harbourfront Centre. Sentosa is open daily.
