Zagreb Cathedral

With its twin Gothic spires soaring over the city, this iconic neo-Gothic cathedral is Zagreb’s most recognizable edifice.

In a prominent position in the Upper Town in Kaptol Square, Zagreb Cathedral is visible from almost every part of Zagreb. It is known for its striking neo-Gothic architecture. It’s an active place of worship, but the number of worshippers is usually matched by tourists gaping at the magnificent architecture. Gaze up at its iconic twin towers and admire the décor of its sacred interior, which features exquisite stained-glass windows, intricate reliefs and neo-Gothic altars.

Also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this monumental church was completed in the late 19th century to replace an earlier structure that was destroyed by an earthquake. The architect tasked with its reconstruction was Hermann Bollé. He added the building’s signature bell towers, which stand 354 feet (108 meters) tall. Get acquainted with more of Bollé’s work at Zagreb’s popular Mirogoj Cemetery.

Enter the church to view the vast nave, which can accommodate more than 5,000 people. Though more austere than the exterior, the interior has plenty of artistic touches. In particular, the shrines are worth investigating, as are the colorful stained-glass windows, which date from the 19th century. Don’t miss the tomb of the Croatian Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac. This controversial figure was accused of colluding with the Nazi-aligned Ustaše regime during World War II and was at the same time attributed with helping to save the lives of Croatian Jews. His tomb features reliefs carved by eminent Croatian sculptorIvan Meštrović.

View the numerous important religious paintings in the church. Look for the 13th-century frescoes in the sacristy, as well as a triptych by German Renaissance painter Albrecht Dürerin a side altar. Visitors can also attend a Mass or occasional organ concerts. Check notices to see if any recitals are happening during your visit.

Zagreb Cathedral is open daily, with limited opening hours on Sunday. Entrance is free. To get here, take the funicular to the Upper Town. The church is located on top of a hill and the spires are visible from most parts of the city, so use them to help guide your way.
