Waterloo Bridge

Waterloo Bridge which includes a bridge, a river or creek and a city

Stroll along the Ladies Bridge for some of the best views in London and go for dinner in the vibrant South Bank area.

Waterloo Bridge is an elegant and historic crossing at the bend of the River Thames in central London. The bridge overlooks many of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the London Eye and the National Theatre. Stand in the center of the bridge’s footpath as dusk approaches to witness the legendary Waterloo sunset, made famous by the Kinks 1967 hit.

Find out about the bridge’s history and how it was named to commemorate the British victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Interestingly, it is known as the “Ladies Bridge,” because it was constructed primarily by women after men were conscripted into World War II. This is the second bridge to be built at this location. The bridge is also known for its cultural impact, having influenced two movies that share its name as well as the Kinks’ song Waterloo Sunset.

Take photos of the spectacular vistas that incorporate the Southbank Centre on the southern flank of the river. On the opposite side, the view includes the majestic 18th-century Somerset House. Spot distant riverside attractions, such as Big Ben to the west and the St. Paul’s Cathedral and the City of London financial district to the east.

Go for a romantic stroll after dinner in South Bank and relish the view of the city lights. The views from this riverside stretch are considered among the most spectacular in London, making the bridge a popular spot for wedding proposal.

The structure is open to vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians. Walk its full length to appreciate the views from varying angles. Watch boats float by or embark on a trip on the London River Bus service that departs from the London Eye Pier.

Waterloo Bridge stretches across the River Thames in central London, connecting the South Bank area to the Victoria Embankment. The bridge is within easy walking distance of Temple, Embankment and Waterloo Tube stations. Arrive by train at Charing Cross or Waterloo railway stations or take a bus to this central area.
