Renowned all across the world as a bustling, sunny piece of paradise, Waikiki Beach is the ideal place to while away the hours lounging on its gorgeous white sands or heading out into the warm Pacific waters that it borders.
Here, you can go for a swim by jumping into the sea from the western end of the beach, complete with a natural lagoon created by a reef. This is a safe place to take a dip, clear of the waves and the surfers.
There is nowhere better for first-timers to try their hand at surfing, with several companies operating here that will show you how it's done. Then when you've tried it, go and see the towering statue of Duke Kahanamoku on the promenade behind the beach, a tribute to the Olympic swimming sensation who is credited as the man who introduced surfing as a sport to the world.
Or if you'd rather stay on dry land, you can enjoy lying in the shade of a palm tree and admire the view of Diamond Head rising above. All across the beach, there is always something happening, with hula competitions, outrigger canoe races and acrobatic tandem surfing among the spectacular shows here. Some of these acrobats can do astonishing things on the water, and their skills are not to be missed. Waikiki Beach is constantly buzzing, so you'll never be bored.
Then when the day is over and evening arrives, the beach is a beautiful spot from which to admire and appreciate the setting sun. If you visit on a Friday evening, you can even witness a free firework show held at the western end of the beach, which will light up the always beautiful Hawaiian sky. All around the beach, you'll also find hotel bars, restaurants and nightclubs where you can go in the evening.
Whether you want to swim, surf or simply relax and enjoy the sunshine, Waikiki Beach is a great place to go all year round. It draws the crowds, but even in front of Kapiolani Park, you'll find quieter spots. It is a safe place in general, but make sure you don't leave valuables unattended.
