From this ancient and picturesque square, access some of the oldest and most impressive buildings in Seville, including the world’s largest gothic cathedral.

Triunfo Plaza (Plaza del Triunfo) is surrounded by some of the most important and impressive buildings in Seville. They include the monumental cathedral, its bell tower and the Real Alcázar, a beautiful palace with a history that spans more than 1,000 years. Tour these ancient structures and delight in the square’s gorgeous surroundings.

Visit the Archivo de Indias, completed in 1646. The building stores the archives of the Spanish empire. There are thousands of documents covering the administration of Spanish overseas territories. Access to the files is restricted to staff and researchers but exhibitions for the general public are held throughout the year.

In front of the building is the Temple of Triumph of Our Lady of Patronage monument from which the square takes its name. This shrine features a statue of the Virgin and Child and was built in 1756 to commemorate the city's survival from an earthquake the previous year. In the center of the square, look for a monument to the Immaculate Conception, erected in 1918.

Enter the Casa de la Provincia, a free museum that hosts temporary art and photography exhibitions. This 14th-century building with a pink and white façade used to be an inn for pilgrims and a refuge for the poor.

Spend at least a couple of hours exploring the Real Alcazar, a complex of mudejar palace buildings constructed by the Moors during the early Middle Ages. Christian kings took over during the middle of the 13th century and the site still serves as a residence for the royal family when they’re in Seville.

Travel to Triunfo Plaza by bus or tram. Located close to main roads, the square is easy to get to. While you are in the square, take a ride in one of the horse-drawn carriages that are parked close to the Real Alcazar. They are a fun but fairly expensive way to see the sights.
