The little town of Tørring is perfect for anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet, but is a great base for some fantastic activities: the Gudenå River offers some of Jutland’s loveliest scenery, and its proximity to the larger towns of Horsens and Vejle opens up a range of other exciting things to see and do.
‘Tørring’ stems from the old Danish word ‘thur’, which means ‘dry’, and aptly describes the dry ground on which the original village was located, where it was a natural crossing point over the Gudenå River. When the railway was built, the town began to grow. There are now just under 2,700inhabitants and the town is a base for canoe trips down the upper reaches of the river.
Such canoe trips are ideal for families with older children and we thoroughly recommend renting a canoe and going off to explore and enjoy the scenery close up. There are many sights to see along the way, including the bird reserve at Åle Kær, the old hydroelectric power station at Vestbirk, the Klosterkanal and Klostermølle.
If you arrive in summer, you may be in time for the town festival. The event features activities for all ages, a cake-baking competition, stands and many other things. In the evening there is communal dining with entertainment, music and dance.
A holiday in Tørring is perfect if you want to relax, get away from the hustle and bustle and use the town as a base from which to explore the attractions of the area. Places to go and see include Vejle or Horsens, just 12 and 17 miles away respectively. If the kids are with you, LEGOLAND® is only half an hour’s drive away and Givskud Zoo can be reached within just 20 minutes.
Peace and quiet, calming surroundings, the charm of eastern Jutland, the proximity of the Guden River, Vejle, Horsens and other interesting towns nearby await you on a visit to Tørring.
