Dominating Piaţa Regele Ferdinand, this regal structure is one of Oradea’s main centers for arts and culture.

The State Theatre, also known as the Queen Mary Theatre and the Szigligeti Theatre, is among the city’s most important heritage buildings. Built in the early 20th century, the theatre offers a range of performances from Puccini to puppetry. Book tickets for a play, opera or dance performance. Admire other historic buildings lining Piaţa Regele Ferdinand and relax with a cool drink on a restaurant terrace.

The theatre was designed in 1900 by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, the architects also responsible for the famous Vienna Opera House. Survey the building’s graceful eclectic design with neoclassical and neo-Renaissance exterior decorations and tall ionic columns. Identified as the Teatrul Regina Maria, the impressive theatre was featured on a 2013 Romanian stamp.

Venture inside and find statues in the reception hall as well as around the corridors on the ground and upper floors. In contrast to the exterior, the interior is designed in a more neo-Baroque style.

Purchase tickets for one of the regular performances hosted at the theatre throughout the year. These diverse shows include opera, folk and contemporary dance, puppetry and symphonic orchestra performances as well as plays performed in Romanian and Hungarian.

Don’t miss the Adorjan 1 House located outside on the left side of the theatre between Patrioților Street and Moscovei Street. Constructed as a theatre storage space in the early 20th century, the lovely Secession-style building is characterized by intricate floral decorations.

Several restaurants line the square. Sit on an open-air terrace and view the area’s other gorgeous Secessionist buildings as you eat or drink. Stop by in the evening when the theatre features pretty illumination.

The State Theatre or Queen Mary Theatre is located on Calea Republicii at the southern end of Strada Republicii, within walking distance of Piaţa Unirii or Union Square. Keep in mind that you can only visit the interior if you have tickets to see a performance. Discover some of the city’s best music and culture at the State Theatre.
