Join hordes of fans for a thrilling rugby match or an open-air concert at this Lyon stadium with a rich sporting history.

Stade Gerland is a famous name for French sports fans, as this is the historic home of the soccer team Olympique Lyonnais. Today, the arena is known as Matmut Stadium de Gerland and the soccer team have moved on, yet it remains a major sporting and concert venue. Attend an event here to experience the historic stadium come to life with music and the roar of a crowd.

The Stade Gerland was originally built between 1913 and 1926 as a multipurpose arena for sports including athletics and tennis. Olympique Lyonnais moved in during the 1950s and the stadium was expanded in the ’80s and ’90s to accommodate major international soccer competitions. Come today to watch LOU Rugby play. LOU Rugby took up the stadium after Parc Olympique Lyonnais was constructed in 2017.

Remember to bring your camera to take lots of photos of this iconic venue, which is covered by curved roofs on either end of the stadium. Huge floodlights stand at each corner of the stadium to allow for late-night matches and gigs.

Join vast crowds of people to watch a rugby union match. The stadium has seating capacity for 35,000 people, creating a lively atmosphere at big events here. Enter into the stadium through one of the four giant arches that stand on each end, structures so iconic that they’ve been classified as historical monuments.

See some of the biggest names in music playing in the stadium. Previous concerts have included headliners such as the Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and Guns’n’Roses. Check the stadium’s website to see what’s happening during your visit.

The Stade Gerland is in the 7th Arrondissement of Lyon, south of the city centre. Drive here and park your car in the lots nearby or take the subway, which stops outside the stadium. Explore the wider sports complex to see places such as the Palais des Sports, a skateboard park and the Gerland Table Tennis centre.
