Close to the bustling city, these lovely gardens have served as Singapore's green lungs since 1859. Sitting on 183 acres of land, this idyllic garden has something for everyone, from the casual strollers looking for some peace and quiet to nature lovers interested in the garden's world-class collection of orchids. And with children's playgrounds, lakes, regular outdoor concerts and tracts of jungle, where ever you go, there's something to explore.
The gardens attract visitors from dawn to dusk, but if you're keen to explore in peace, you need to arrive before sunrise – this is also the only way of avoiding the heat. Though there is plenty of shade if you look for it – being home to a tropical rainforest, visitors can shelter from the sun under the dense canopy.
If you have the family in tow, the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden is a must-see. Here you will find an excellent educational and interactive centre for all ages and a water play area. Or if you're a fan of orchids, the National Orchid Garden shouldn't be missed. For a small admission charge, you can explore the wonderful setting which has over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids of orchids spread over three hectares.
Throughout the year, refrains of orchestral music can be heard from an outdoor concert by Symphony Lake: see the gardens' website for details. And for a heavenly meal, Au Jardin Les Amis, set in a splendid colonial bungalow, is excellent, though you will need to book well ahead.
The gardens are located in downtown Singapore and can be reached by car, taxi or public transport. They are open daily and admission is free, though there is a small fee to enter the National Orchid Garden.
