Steady, constant breezes and readily available lessons make this Barbados beach an unmissable stop off for watersports enthusiasts of all persuasions.

Situated at the very southernmost tip of the island, Silver Sands Beach offers the ultimate recipe for enjoyment for people at both ends of the beach-bunny scale.

For those who enjoy lazy, hazy, sun-filled days – pick your spot, set up your lounger and sun umbrella, and break out your book. Alternate between rounds of sunbathing and sea-bathing, repeating as needed for pure relaxation.

For those who enjoy something a little more active – slap on the sun protection, strap on the surfboard and hit the waves like there's no tomorrow!

The steady winds off the coast of Silver Sands Beach make the area ideal for wind-based watersports. (Just ask Brian Talma, 1988 and 1992 Olympics windsurfing competitor, who completed a lot of his training here.)

For those who are new to the practice of wind sports, it's advisable to invest some time in a quick lesson. A good way to start is with paddle surfing or stand-up paddling. A short lesson of about 5 minutes should give you enough of the basics to manage these large boards. Using your newfound expertise, navigate your way about 3 kilometres north to Oistins, where you can go snorkelling with the area's sea turtles.

Take a step up the wind sports ladder to try your hand at windsurfing. Another quick lesson in the shallows will teach you the fundamental skills, such as maintaining your balance and keeping the sail full. And then you can take these skills out onto the water. Be prepared to take a few clumsy spills – it's all part and parcel of the fun.

Once you've well and truly got your sea legs, you could advance to surfing, or even kite surfing if you're feeling brave.

Silver Sands Beach is located 14 kilometres to the south of Bridgetown. The easiest way to get here is via bus from the capital. For the best possible wind sports conditions, try to visit between the months of November and July.
