Nestled on the riverbank, these four preserved, Spanish gated communities date back to the 1700s.

In the early 18th-century, Spanish Catholic religious orders built a series of missions in South Texas in order to spread the word of God among the people. Apache attacks and the spread of disease forced locals to take refuge in the missions, and in doing so, they had to agree to become Catholic and embrace the Spanish culture, forgoing their traditional life. The city of San Antonio was born from these missions.

Each mission comprised of churches, farmland, craftsman workshops and living quarters. Since their closure in the 1800s, four of these gated communities have been preserved and are now open to the public. Nestled in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, you will find them scattered along the San Antonio River.

The four missions – Mission Concepcion, Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada – are easily located if you are travelling by car. Alternatively, you can take the Mission Hike and Bike Trail, 13 kilometres of stunning winding trails that connect each mission along the river. Meander through parkland and old neighbourhoods along this mostly flat-surfaced trail, which is suitable for young children. This really is a fantastic way to soak up the natural beauty of the area.

With remnants of original artwork on the surrounding walls and ceilings, the church at Mission Concepcion is undoubtedly the best preserved building. Over at Mission San José you will see how the granary and gristmill have been restored. This was the most favourable mission with over 300 people in residence at one time. It is also where the visitors' centre is located. Further down at Missions San Juan the church and bell tower are still actively used for services. Mission Espada has an acequia, an irrigation system that is still partially in use today.

Avail of the free guided tour through each of the missions and get an insight into Spanish Colonial life in the 1700s. They are scheduled throughout the day and last approximately an hour. As well as a small museum, there are regular church services and film sessions so it is advised to start your day early when visiting this historical park.
