A favorite pier in Panama City Beach is great for fishing and promenades. Enjoy the adjacent beach, shopping and dining too.

Jutting out over the Gulf of Mexico, Russell-Fields City Pier is a great place to try sport fishing or watch experienced fishers pulling in their catch. Even if you’re not joining in the sport, walk out onto the 1,500-foot-long (460-meter) pier to enjoy the sun, breeze and fresh air or view a beautiful sunset.

Enter the pier through a well-equipped tackle shop, where you can get fishing supplies or cold drinks. The pier is about 25 feet (8 meters) above the water, but it’s wide enough for visitors with fear of heights to walk comfortably down the center. Look over the railings to see fish, dolphins, turtles and other marine creatures swimming in the clear water. If you cast a line, you may catch mackerel, flounder or 70 other types of fish.

The pier is on the northern section of Panama City Beach. Like the rest of the 27-mile-long (43-kilometer) beach, this stretch is perfect for sunbathing, looking for shells and splashing in the waves. Make use of the beach volleyball courts here or bring your family dog for a run.

Spend part of the day with activities in the neighborhood across the street from the pier. Visit Panama City Pier Park, not a green space, but a popular shopping and dining destination. Look for fashion and souvenirs at more than 100 retail stores. Cool off in the air-conditioned IMAX theater, play laser tag or listen to country music. Restaurants range from ice cream shops and fast-food establishments to great spots for oysters and steak. Enjoy refreshing cocktails after a long day in the sun. In the fall, attend Oktoberfest at Aaron Bessant Park just north.

Enjoy Russell-Fields City Pier at any time of day or night. Pay a fee to enter the pier and an additional fee to be allowed to fish. Rental fishing gear is available at the entry to the pier if you don’t have your own.

The pier is about 6 miles (9 kilometers) from the center of Panama City Beach and 3 miles (5 kilometers) from a similar structure, the M.B. Miller County Pier.
