Pack your swimsuit, sunglasses and sunscreen for a day of fun and relaxation at Punta Morena. This attractive white sandy beach ringed by palm trees is located on Cozumel's eastern coast and is popular with surfers. It is a beautiful spot that often serves as a backdrop for weddings.
Some of the best waves for surfing on Cozumel approach the shore on this side of the island. Watch surfers in action or rent a board and ride the swells toward the beach. If you have never surfed before but want to give it a try, take surfing lessons from skilled instructors at the beach.
Go for a swim in the blue-green Caribbean waters. Be careful of conditions, as the sea can be choppy here. Look for the protected cove, which is a particularly good spot for children and novice swimmers. Another good place for a swim is in the swimming pool of the beach club.
If you don't want to get into the water, lie in a hammock or on one of the sun loungers near the pool. As you relax, enjoy sweeping views of the Caribbean. Let young children in your group burn off some energy in the playground while you treat yourself to a massage at the club. Then, enjoy some tropical cocktails and a meal of fried seafood or other local specialties. Afterward, work off the meal with a stroll along the sandy shoreline.
Punta Morena is about 11 miles (18 kilometers) east of San Miguel, the island's main city. From here, travel to the beach by taxi or rent a moped, scooter or car and take the cross-island highway. Parking is free at Punta Morena.
With Cozumel's tropical Caribbean climate, Punta Morena is a good year-round destination. Note that the island's rainy season is from September to November.
