The Plaza de Gipuzkoa (Gipuzkoa Square), also known as Plaza de las Cadenas (Chains’ Square) is a famous square in Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía in Spanish), a small town in Gipuzkoa Province, Basque Country, in northern Spain. The picturesque Old Quarter of Hondarribia is considered a historic site because of the many interesting buildings scattered around it. In earlier times it was enclosed by fortified walls that protected the town from foreign invasions. Now it is surrounded by iconic traditional buildings with no more than three or four stories.
The Plaza de Gipuzkoa was constructed using a very traditional architectural style, giving the square a medieval charm. Walk to the plaza and discover the meeting point of two lively streets of the Old Quarter: Satarka Kalea and Harategi Kalea.

Find another very popular square, the Plaza de Armas (Arms Square), which has been the scene of many of the town’s most relevant celebrations for centuries. Admire the gorgeous Castillo de Carlos V, a castle near the plaza, and take some great photos of its elegant façade. If you continue walking you will reach the famous Barrio de la Marina or Barrio de la Portua, the pleasant fisherman’s quarter.
