The island’s spine is also its commercial hub. Drive or bike the road’s length to find attractions and discover many stores and restaurants.

When visiting Sanibel Island in southwestern Florida by car or bike, it’s impossible to miss Periwinkle Way. The road begins directly off the causeway linking to the mainland of Fort Myers. Traveling by car, bike or on foot will acquaint you with where to shop and dine. Traffic can be slow at peak periods, so use the time as an impromptu tour and decide where you might like to stop.

Visit Sanibel Lighthouse at the eastern end of the island by turning left onto Periwinkle Way when you come off the causeway. View the unique structure, which may not be what you’d expect of a lighthouse. The metal tower has an open concept and looks practically the same way it did when built in 1884. The ship carrying the lighthouse parts from a foundry in Jersey City sank 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the island but surprisingly nearly all the pieces were salvaged. In 2016, the lighthouse and surrounding buildings were designated a historic site.

Farther along Periwinkle Way, a small diversion will take you to Sanibel Historical Museum and Village. Tour some of the 10 restored buildings, including a school and post office, from the island’s pioneer times. The museum store in one of the buildings offers craft items and other merchandise from local artisans.

The position of the island and the prevalent ocean currents make Sanibel a popular destination for shell collectors. Drive to the end of Periwinkle Way and turn to reach Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. This family-oriented museum is one of few in the country focused strictly on mollusks and shells. Touch pools and a giant Pacific octopus are among its popular attractions.

Spend time at Tarpon Bay Beach south of the shell museum. Bring a container for collecting empty shells, which will make a splendid collection. You’ll be one of many beach visitors doing what locals call the Sanibel Stoop as you harvest your shells.

Periwinkle Way can get crowded. To minimize traffic issues, arrive early or drive in the opposite direction of main tourist flow. Even better, rent a bike and pedal past slow-moving cars.
