Gaze at geological formations spread across four states and see a historic fire lookout at this panoramic place, the highest point in Mesa Verde National Park.

In a national park filled with enthralling archaeological history and sensational natural views, Park Point literally stands tall above the rest. At an elevation of 8,572 feet (2,613 meters), Park Point is the highest spot in Mesa Verde National Park. Come here to admire far-reaching vistas, hike, picnic and learn about the importance of early wildfire detection.

Trek along the short Park Point Trail, leading to overlooks facing north and south. For something more challenging, take the longer Point Lookout Trail, which is about 2 miles (3 kilometers) long and extends across a nearby mesa.

Enjoy the views, which on a clear day include sights in the states of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. No matter which direction you look, you are likely to see one of the iconic images of the American Southwest. Look south to the jagged and shrouded-in-legend Shiprock volcanic formation. To the west is Sleeping Ute Mountain, which resembles a person lying on his back. Face north to see the majestic peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Turn to the northeast to view the La Plata mountain range.

Find out about the fascinating history of Park Point Fire Lookout, which has been used to help detect wildfires since 1939. The octagonal station has been manned every day from June to September since its inception. After being refurbished in 2009, the lookout tower was placed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Visitors are welcome to enter the structure to browse educational displays detailing the vital role that the lookout plays.

Consider staying until sunset. The hues that paint the evening sky in this region are famous for being extremely colorful.

Find Park Point off the main park road in Mesa Verde National Park, which requires a fee for entry. Park Point is accessible by both car and hiking trail. The Park Point Fire Lookout is open to the public daily from June to September.
