Go on fishing charters, swim in the sea and browse shops and restaurants near Paihia’s main beach, the site of an annual swimming event that attracts competitors from around the country.

Enjoy fishing, swimming, picnicking and many other outdoor activities at Paihia Town Beach. The main beach is lined with several cafés and restaurants serving international cuisine and fresh seafood caught by local fishermen. Book a sea kayaking adventure or a big game fishing charter and set out into the sea.

Bring your swimming costume and towel to the beach and spend a day relaxing on the sands. Lie out and let the sun warm your skin. If it starts to get too hot, cool off with a refreshing dip in the ocean waters.

Pack a picnic to eat on the beach when hunger strikes. Alternatively, buy fish and chips nearby or walk over to the restaurants and cafés of the Paihia Wharf area. Many boat charter and cruise companies operate from the area around the beach and wharf.

Come in November to swim the Bay of Islands Classic, an annual ocean swimming event with several different length routes. The event occurs annually and attracts swimmers and spectators from across the country.

Head to the northern end of Paihia to reach Te Tii Bay, a stretch of golden sand fringed with native pohutukawa trees. Picnic on the sands or explore Te Tii Bay by sea kayak. The bay also has a children’s playground and nearby camping and caravan grounds.

Find several hiking trails near Paihia Beach, including the Harrison’s Bush Scenic Reserve Trail. Follow the path through one of the most beautiful native forests in the Bay of Islands. Another excellent trail, the Waitangi to Haruru Falls Track, runs through a mature mangrove forest. Look for sea birds and indigenous flora on many of these picturesque walks.

The main town beach is located in the heart of Paihia, one of the busiest tourist towns in the Bay of Islands. Stay in luxurious resorts with spa facilities or opt for less-expensive self-catered apartments.

Lovely beach but some sections shelve quite steeply and there's a strongish undertow - need to supervise little ones.
