Ooty Lake featuring rides

Relax by the water and go for a paddle on this peaceful lake, just minutes from the busy city center.

Sit on the grass beneath tall trees and watch as small boats meander across the waters of Ooty Lake. Try one of the peddle-boats or enjoy the surrounding woodland haven from your carriage on the toy train.

Measuring approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) in length, this L-shaped man-made lake was created by city founder John Sullivan in 1824. Intended purely for entertainment purposes it was formed by damming the streams that flow down the Ooty Valley.

Escape the bustle of the city and spend an afternoon sunbathing on the green banks of the lake. Work on your tan or lie in the shade of the lush eucalyptus trees that surround the water.

For something a little more active head to the boathouse at the north end of the lake where you can rent several types of watercraft. Stretch your legs on a peddle-boat or explore the calm water from the comfort of a small motorized vessel.

If you are feeling really adventurous you can even try your hand at horse riding. The center behind the boathouse offers short lessons as well as guided rides. Those who would rather trust their own two feet should walk through the woodland park to the south where you can spot deer among the dense trees.

Enjoy the best views of the area by hopping on the toy train. The track winds its way around part of the lake. Trains set off every few minutes.

Ooty Lake is a couple of miles southwest of the middle of town. If you would rather not walk, the city train station can be found on the northeastern side of the water. The lake and surrounding attractions are open all day year-round.
