Scenic mangrove forests, a labyrinth of corals of many hues and water in varying shades of blue earned this area the title of the Sea of Seven Colors.

Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park is a protected marine area off the coast of Colombia’s Providencia Island. The coral reef system beneath the water and the vast mangrove forests create a stunning setting. Ride a boat out to the visitor center on Crab Caye for insights into the ecological significance of the 4-square-mile (10-square-kilometer) park.

Chat with docents to learn how the park shelters a coral reef network that is the third largest in the world. Make your way to Iron Wood Hill and admire views of the mangrove swamp from above. Rent a kayak and enter the forest through a narrow corridor. Paddle to the hidden lagoon and enjoy the utter serenity between the walls of mangroves.

The underwater corals and varying depths make the Caribbean Sea here shimmer in a variety of light and dark blue hues. Take a tour of the park on a boat and dive into the water with your own snorkeling gear. Marvel at the amazing numbers and varieties of colorful fish swimming around you in the warm, clear water. Rays and turtles are among the highlights.

To visit the park, you must be vaccinated against yellow fever at least 10 days in advance of your trip. Bring your immunization records for proof. Make sure not to touch any of the coral reef or purchase handicrafts made from it.

There is a fee to enter the park, with free entrance for children under 5 years of age.

Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park runs from the northeastern corner of Providencia Island, in the Caribbean Sea between Colombia and Nicaragua. From the Airport El Embrujo between the districts of El Valle and Pueblo Viejo, head east to find the park.

Explore the rest of the island for other gems such as the Iglesia Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles, the Playa Mazanillo and Almond Beach.
