Hike up a sloping path to reach this craggy volcanic spire, one of the natural icons of the island.

The Old Man of Storr is a 165-foot (50-meter) tall rock pinnacle set on an elevated position on the Trotternish Peninsula. The rock is a local landmark and on clear days, its protruding form can be seen from miles around. Follow a path up to the foot of the Old Man. From here, admire views that extend out across the sea to the islands of Rona and Raasay and south toward shimmering lochs, Portree and the dark stone peaks of the Black Cuillin range.

The whole Trotternish Ridge area, including the Old Man of Storr, was formed by an ancient landslide. Ask locals about the legends associated with the Old Man rock formation. Some stories suggest the pinnacle is the thumb of a giant, while others say it is the body of the Old Man of Storr who was turned to stone during a fight between giants. In recent years, the site has been used a filming location for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

From the parking lot, begin the ascent uphill. The path is relatively steep and it usually takes around an hour to reach the top. Be careful as you ascend. The higher you go, the rougher and rockier the trail becomes.

Weather can be changeable on this part of Skye so come prepared for all eventualities. Even if the skies look clear at the base, bring waterproof outerwear in case of rain. Sturdy footwear is also necessary as the path can quickly become muddy and slippery.

Bring along a camera to capture photographs of the stunning vistas from the top. Try to spot the islands of Rona and Raasay and even mainland Scotland out beyond the coast. Occasionally, mist rolls in and obscures the views, creating an eerie atmosphere.

To reach the Old Man of Storr, drive north from Portree for about 6.8 miles (11 kilometers). Alternatively, ride the bus from Portree and get off near Storr car park. Look for the wooden gate at the end of the parking lot and trek along the path that leads off from here.
