Mudam Luxembourg

Mudam Luxembourg featuring a fountain, interior views and modern architecture

Rising up like a magnificent glass cathedral over the medieval stronghold of Fort Thüngen, this museum is the city’s premier destination for contemporary art.

Find a beacon of contemporary culture rising over the thick stone walls of a medieval fortress at Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, affectionately known as Mudam. Renowned for its commitment to innovations in art and design, Mudam holds an impressive collection of artworks by internationally acclaimed modernist and contemporary artists. Visit the museum to see a rotating selection of its permanent collection, as well as thought-provoking temporary exhibitions and screenings.

Mudam’s magnificent architecture is one of the museum’s defining features. Designed by famed Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, the museum has a prism-like glass façade extending out of the ruins of the 18th-century Fort Thüngen. Enter the building through its sandy-colored stone entrance hall and explore the vast and airy exhibition spaces within. Find temporary exhibits showcasing a selection of the museum’s collection and touring exhibitions by international artists. The museum’s glass canopy provides new perspectives on the art and architecture at different times of the day.

Time your visit to coincide with a programmed event, including lectures in the auditorium, workshops and educational activities in the studio and special screenings in the museum’s Medialab multimedia room. Stop at the Mudam Café for a luxurious lunch of regional dishes in the outdoor courtyard. The Mudam Boutique has a wide selection of designer gifts, homewares, accessories and souvenirs, as well as an extensive stock of art books and magazines.

The museum has Wi-Fi Internet and a free smartphone application. Download the app for interesting information about the museum’s collection and its architect.

Mudam is located in Dräi Eechelen Park in Luxembourg City’s historic Kirchberg quarter. The admission fee is reduced for students and people under 26 years of age. Visit late on Wednesday for a guided tour of the museum in English. Wednesday evenings offer free admission. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and Christmas Day. Use the bus stop nearby or find parking at Trois Glands.

Be sure to tour Fort Thüngen when you visit the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean and explore the fort’s fascinating history museum.
