Military Park

Inspect the array of military sculptures and see the sword from above in this scenic park in the downtown area.

Military Park is a glorious 6-acre (2-hectare) park with a triangular shape and a range of soldier-themed monuments. It takes its name and theme from its former use as a training facility for soldiers from 1667 to 1869. Relax in this slice of serenity in downtown Newark and consider military history in the United States.

Gaze up at the impressive Wars of Americastatue, which was sculpted by the creator of the iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. The war memorial depicts 42 soldiers and two horses in the midst of battle. Note that this statue connects to a floral display, forming the crossguard and blade of a sword when seen from above.

Admire the lifelike bust of President John Kennedy and see the other statues of famous figures from U.S. history. Sip from the water fountain that bears the inscription, “My cup runneth over.” Have a picnic with your family in this pleasant park and appreciate the escape from the hubbub and concrete of the downtown surroundings.

Discover the reading library and watch an outdoor movie screening. Attend one of the events that take place here throughout the year, such as the Afro Beat Fest. Regular farmers markets and jazz concerts are also organized in the park. Join such activities as yoga, Zumba and line dancing on the grass. Look up at the skyscrapers surrounding the park.

Enjoy lunch or dinner at the park’s charming restaurant, which is open Monday through Friday from morning until evening. Purchase snacks or hot drinks at one of the many cafés in the area.

Military Park is a block west of the Passaic River in the center of Newark. Arrive by rail at nearby Newark Penn Station or take the Newark Light Rail system to Military Park Station. See other sights in the area, such as the Newark Museum, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Washington Park.
