Marvel at the city’s remarkable recovery. Most of Mayagüez was destroyed in an earthquake in 1918, so the city stands today as a relatively modern development, emerging from that disaster.
Relax in Plaza de Colon for a sense of the city’s atmosphere and charm. This social hub features the Christopher Columbus Statue that commemorates the explorer’s arrival to western Puerto Rico.
One side of the plaza is dominated by the stunning Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, an impressive pastel yellow church that was built in the 18th century. Meet both cute and fearsome animals in Mayagüez Zoo, the island’s only zoo. The zoo is divided into displays from the savannah and the forests of Africa. Explore a bird sanctuary and a butterfly house in this expansive attraction.
Relax in the gardens of the Tropical Agriculture Research Station, where exotic trees grow on the grounds. Wander through bamboo plantations or gaze up at tropical fruit trees in this spacious arboretum area.

Fly into Eugenio Maria de Hostos Airport in Mayagüez from San Juan or drive to the town in about 2.5 hours. Visit in spring, between March and June, to enjoy warm days without the crowds of winter. Many of the attractions in the city are close together and can be visited while walking around the centre.
