Come to an oasis in the city to find an island showcasing extraordinary plants and mighty oak trees and a restaurant overlooking this wonderful park.

Featuring canals, Baroque gardens and historic buildings, Karlsaue Park is a vast set of picturesque and serene grounds in the inner city. It has a range of botanical displays, particularly on the Island of Flowers. Stroll through the natural corridors between the clusters of trees to feel closer to nature.

Bring your kids to frolic in the wide open spaces of this 370-acre (150-hectare) urban park. Pack a picnic to enjoy with your family on the banks of the enchanting canal. Paths decorated with intriguing sculptures and benches crisscross through woodland areas. Join the joggers and cyclists who traverse the park’s perimeter to stay fit. Remain in this romantic setting to view the sunset.

On the northern side of the park stands the majestic Orangerie, which dates back to the early 18th century. Photograph its elegant terrace and arched windows and see the building at night, when it is illuminated in golden light. Visit the Cabinet of Astronomy and Physics to see a large collection of technology and instruments and watch a star show at the Planetarium. Step inside the ornate Marble Bathhouse, established in the early 1700s not as a place for bathing but as an event space for royalty and their guests.

Make your way to the Island of Flowers at the southern end of the park. Cross the graceful bridge and make a wish as you gaze down at your reflection in the water. Visit in spring to see its flurry of flowers blossoming in bright and flamboyant colors.

Note that the park is open year-round and is free to access, with no barriers. There is a fee to get to the Island of Flowers, which is closed on Mondays.

Karlsaue Park occupies a large area of scenic grounds stretching southeast from the heart of Kassel. Ride the city’s tram system and walk for a few minutes to reach the park. Go to nearby sights as well, such as the Naturkundemuseum, the Fridericianum museum and the early 19th-century Staendehaus building.
