Kamala Beach is prized for its relaxed atmosphere. Unlike the busier hotspots, it offers peaceful stretches of pristine sand enclosed by forested hills, the perfect place to rest and recharge. Head into the village for authentic Thai food, or to pick up local craft items.
The size of the beach means that you will always be able to find space to stretch out and soak up the sun. Sun loungers can be hired from operators at the south end of the beach, or simply spread out your towel on the soft sand.
Thanks to protection offered by the bay location, the sea off Kamala Beach is a very safe spot to swim. You’ll be treated to extremely calm waters between November and April, and at most, a slight ocean swell between May and October.
Although Kamala is still quieter than many other tourist hotspots, this fishing village has been developing its attractions and activities. A number of luxury hotels are now dotted along the beachfront, offering quality facilities to both hotel guests and day visitors. Discover the gourmet restaurants and bars, or sample the pampering mixture of traditional Thai and international treatments at the resort spas.
If you are feeling more energetic, chose from snorkelling expeditions at the north end of Kamala Beach, available between November and April, yoga classes, or a game of bowls at the Kamala Lawn Bowling Club, the only one in Phuket. You’ll also find traditional Thai cooking classes on offer, so you’ll be able to recreate the unique tastes once back from your trip.
Back from the water, you’ll find shops and stalls lining the streets of Kamala. A village market is held every Friday night, where you’ll be able to buy fresh local produce, clothes, DVDs and craft items. Also, don’t miss the twice-weekly market on the Kamala Main Road, with its bustling atmosphere and fresh Thai food.
Once the sun sets, head to Phuket Fantasea, the most extravagant entertainment show on the island. Explore the elaborate traditional structures, or ride on an elephant, before taking in the show which combines acrobatics and special effects with traditional Thai culture.
Situated on the west coast of Phuket Island, Kamala Beach is eight kilometres north of Patong Beach, and approximately 30 minutes from the International Airport.
