Jurassic Forest

Watch out for the formidable creatures stalking the ancient woodland when you visit this thrilling and educational re-creation of Edmonton’s Jurassic past.

By stepping into Jurassic Forest, you’ll travel back 250 million years through the earth’s history. This 16-hectare prehistoric nature reserve is home to over 50 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, from the gentlest herbivores to the most fearsome predators. Interactive displays and guided safaris make this attraction a great day out for the whole family.

Wooden trails lead through the old-growth forest, following two loops, north and south, that are each approximately one kilometre long. An expert palaeontologist guide will lead the way as you set out on the search for the giant forest residents.

Listen out for the fearsome roar of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs that ever existed. Catch sight of the distinctive outline of a Stegosaurus, with the two rows of pointed plates running down its back. Or, if you dare, pause to marvel at the Albertosaurus, a dangerous predator whose remains were first discovered in Alberta, Canada. You may well see these creatures battling over territory or hunting for their next meal.

Visit the Paleontological Site and join in the dig to uncover more remains of the forest’s ancient inhabitants. There is also a specially-designed adventure play ground for children from two years old and up with rocks to climb and fossils to find. In the Interactive Display area, you can even ride on the back of a Triceratops!

Throughout the forest, there are many information panels with fascinating facts about the plants, animals, insects and birds that inhabit this area nowadays, as well as the dinosaur exhibits. Embark on a Scavenger Hunt and see just how many of the puzzles you can solve. The Scavenger question sheets can be downloaded from the Jurassic Forest website.

Food is available from the on-site cafeteria, or you can bring your own picnic. But make sure you stick to one rule: do not feed the dinosaurs!

Jurassic Forest is 40 minutes by car from downtown Edmonton. Alternatively, buses will take you as far as Gibbons, then you will need to walk the final three kilometres or take a taxi. The attraction is open daily between late April and mid October. Opening hours vary according to the daylight hours, so check the website before you visit.
