With just 30,000 inhabitants, Heerenveen is a small town. But don't let its size fool you! The town has a lot of sights and things to do for all kinds of visitors. Whether you're a sports fan or nature lover, you're bound to find something to do in Heerenveen.
The village has a long history of sports, but is also the oldest fen canal village in the Netherlands. The part of the town that is currently the centre of Heerenveen was established in the 16th century. This also marked the beginning of the village which grew over the centuries and is made up today of 11 districts.
Sports lovers must go to sc Heerenveen's Abe Lenstra Stadion. Take the tour and walk through the players' tunnel, take a look around the changing room and the field, or go to a home game. The stadium is within walking distance of the city centre and is easy to combine with a day exploring historic Heerenveen. For example, visit Oenemastate, an old country home, or the impressive 17th-century city hall Crackstate. There are also a few great museums worth going to. Modern and contemporary art lovers will thoroughly enjoy the Museum Belvédère, which is just outside of the city.
Combine your visit to the city with a day outdoors. Hire bicycles in the summer (or bring your own) and cycle out to Tjeukemeer, where you can sail, walk and surf.
The village is easy to explore on foot, and for day trips you can hire bicycles or take the bus. Bear in mind that the centre of Heerenveen is largely pedestrianised. This means that you can only park around the city centre or in one of the parking garages. There are also two park and ride (P+R) car parks outside the village.
Heerenveen is located in the north of the Netherlands and is easy to reach by car and public transport.
