Explore the casino, international restaurants and many quaint cafés that adorn the charming promenade that overlooks this picturesque sandy haven.

El Sardinero Beach is one of the most popular and lively strands in Santander. Surrounded by scenic verdant gardens and jagged bluffs, the beach offers stunning views in all directions. Take your whole family for a swim in the calm and shallow waters of the Bay of Biscay.

Embark on a pleasant stroll along the pedestrian boulevard that follows the back of the stretch of golden sand for its entire length. Join the joggers and skaters on this wide promenade. Notice the intricate patterns of the tiles that make up the sidewalk.

Lay down a towel or blanket and enjoy a picnic, while listening to the soothing sound of the calm waves lapping against the sand. Clamber over the rocks of the promontories that flank both sides of the beach. Many locals like to sunbathe on the hard surface of these rocks.

Go swimming in the water to cool down or read a book in the shade of the cliffs and trees that shelter you from the scorching afternoon sun. Relax with snacks and drinks at one of the cafés and restaurants behind this active bay.

Stay at one of the many hotels overlooking the beach. Discover the tree-laden Parque de Mataleñas at the northern end of the strand and stroll along the winding paths of the Parque de Mesones and the Jardines de Piquio farther south.

El Sardinero Beach is between the Magdalena Peninsula and the Cabo Menor headland on the eastern flank of the city. Drive northeast from the old quarter and harbor area for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to get here in about 10 minutes. Leave your car in the large parking lot at the back of the beach. See nearby sights, such as the Gran Casino del Sardinero, the Campo Municipal de Golf Mataleñas and the Palacio de la Magdalena.

Don’t sit anywhere near the edge of the sand: the tide brings the water in dramatically
