Pick up useful information with interesting details about Chesapeake Bay and relax at this center with beautiful outdoor areas and activities.

The Dorchester County Visitor Center in Cambridge is a regional information center and a major entry point to the lower Eastern Shore. Helpful staff can give you great tips for planning a tour around the area. They will also provide information about events, shopping, fun activities and accommodations. Enjoy the center’s lovely green area, its small beach and spectacular views.

The building where you’ll find the visitor center is considered a landmark of the city. Look for its huge white sail canopy above the structure and its friendly “Welcome Aboard” sign at the entrance. This well-known organization is not only a tourist attraction, as the folks here also do important work for the city. They oversee the ecological preservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the shoreline stabilizations that protect the rich coastal areas from erosion.

Discover the visitor center’s lovely garden full of native plants and relax in a peaceful green space. Enjoy the little sandy beach area near the center and take panoramic photos of the Choptank River. Try to spot the monument fountain called Flying Goose and enjoy a lovely stroll on the 1-mile-long (1.6-kilometer) trail. Let your kids have fun in the playground next to the center.

While you are at the visitor center, be sure to explore the two levels of exhibits. Discover interesting facts about Dorchester and get a good overview of the region. You’ll also find information on Harriet Tubman and historic Underground Railroad activities. Hear the amazing story about this woman who escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist. Learn how she led enslaved people to freedom using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad, and how she worked as a spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War.

Find the Dorchester County Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park, at the southern end of the highway crossing the Choptank River.
