Covering an expanse of 5 hectares in the heart of the city, Discovery Green is a popular place for both tourists and locals alike, who come here to enjoy the lake, lawns, playgrounds and art spaces. The park plays host to a variety of different music and art performances throughout the year, including outdoor films. The park is also home to an ice-skating rink and the Houston Public Library.
Start at the Andrea and Bill White Promenade which runs through the centre of the park. Named after Houston’s former mayor and his wife the promenade is lined with flea markets and weekend arts and crafts fairs, and offers good views of the city’s skyline. Fitness fans will love the Brown Foundation Promenade and McNair Jogging Trail—lined with 100-year-old oak trees, the area is perfect for walking, jogging or cycling.
Kinder Lake is located on the northern end of Discovery Green. In winter, it transforms into a family-friendly ice-skating rink, while the rest of the year remote-controlled boats can be hired to sail on it.
When the mercury rises, join the locals cooling off under the water fountains – the Gateway Fountain is particularly popular with children thanks to its high jets of water. Younger visitors will also love the bird-themed play park aimed at the under-12s. There is plenty of green space and shaded areas for a laid-back picnic.
Outdoor performances make the most of the beautiful surroundings in the natural grass amphitheatre. Visit the Discovery Green website for details on events being held, including films, concerts, dance and theatre.
If you get up early enough you might catch one of the many daily fitness classes held at the park. There are activities to suit all ages and abilities, and most classes are free and require no reservation – just turn up with in your fitness gear and with a towel and bottle of water in hand.
Open daily, Discovery Green is easily reached via public transport.
