Calahorra is the second largest city in La Rioja, and though it’s notable for its agricultural production, you’ll also find vestiges of a remarkable past. For example, on Paseo del Mercadal in the centre, near the square with the Town Hall, you’ll find the ruins of the Roman circus. If you’d like to explore it, then make sure to spend your next holiday in Calahorra.
The Town Hall, a beautiful red-brick building from 1561, looks over the mall. The main façade has two towers on either side, both crowned with a cross. The roundabout located opposite the Town Hall is home to a statue in honour of Marcus Fabius Quintilian, a Roman rhetorician and teacher who was born in the city.
Cheap trips to Calahorra mean you can also visit the interesting Museo de la Romanización. Located in the old Casa del Millonario, a building from 1910, it hosts various exhibitions on the importance of the town during the conquest and Romanisation of Hispania. You should also be sure not to miss the Roman sewers, located on Calle San Andrés. Their size will give you an idea of what the old city was like.
At the archaeological site of La Clínica, you’ll learn more about Roman Calahorra, as it’s home to the ruins of a building from the 1st century. Its three levels are decorated with columns and stucco, although the best pieces are exhibited in the museum. The most important finding is the marble bust known as La Dama Calagurritana, the symbol of the city.
As for religious sites, the highlight is the Cathedral of Santa María, a Gothic temple from the 17th century. Inside you’ll find a Rococo altarpiece and a copy of the Bible from the 12th century of great historical interest. Within walking distance, you’ll find other religious buildings that are well worth a visit, such as the monastery of San José and the Carmelite convent.
