Reach the magnificent Buda Castle from the River Danube via this elegant chairlift, complete with multiple cabins and panoramic viewing platforms.

Budapest Castle Hill Funicular is the best way to make the short journey from the River Danube to Buda Castle. Take in panoramic views of the river and the city as you are lifted 167 feet (51 meters) from the ground. At the summit explore the fascinating hill and the famous sites around Buda Castle.

Traverse one of the pedestrian footbridges that cross above the funicular. Spend some time on the upper bridge to capture photos of the Budapest skyline as cars pass beneath you.

The funicular has two cars, each with a capacity of 24 passengers. The journey to the summit takes around 90 seconds. Stand in the lower of the car’s three cabins for the best views of the city. Alternatively, walk the steep path to the hill’s summit for a challenge before riding the funicular back down.

Gaze up at the inspiring Buda Castle from the funicular’s base. Admire the majestic architecture of the castle, which is visible from across the city. See it at night when the entire structure is bathed in golden light. Beside the castle is Fisherman’s Bastion, which features neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque towers and a terrace with spectacular views of Budapest. Shop for souvenirs or enjoy a coffee at one of the cafés around the area.

Discover the history behind the funicular line, which was constructed in 1870, before you embark on your ride. It was initially designed to help commuters working in the castle district. Hear about how the line was destroyed in World War II, before being reopened in 1986.

Ride the funicular between morning and late at night on any day. A small fee applies, with discounts for children and return trips available.

Budapest Castle Hill Funicular is on the western bank of the River Danube in the center of the city. Find the funicular station at the western end of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Arrive via metro at Vörösmarty tér on the other side of the river or ride a tram to Krisztina tér, just a short walk from Buda Castle.
