Tourist Guide
Biarritz
This stylish French coastal city is famous for its blend of laid-back beaches, surfing culture, elegant architecture and excellent dining scene.

Attractions range from surfing beaches and historic architecture to award-winning restaurants and museums in the city of Biarritz on France’s Basque coast. Biarritz began as a fishing village in the 1100s. By the 20th century it had become a playground for European royalty and Hollywood stars. Today, Biarritz welcomes a mix of families, surfers, architecture lovers and gourmets.

Biarritz’s stunning 3.7-mile (6-kilometre) coastline spreads around the Bay of Biscay. Relax at waterfront cafés and learn to surf at Côte des Basques, the unofficial birthplace of surfing in France. Discover other surf spots, and historical landmarks such as the lavish Hôtel du Palais, at Grand Plage. Escape the crowds at Marbella Beach or watch your kids play in the calm water at Plage du Port Vieux.

Find major attractions while you wander the streets of the Port Vieux, Biarritz’s old harbour. Check out the traditional cottages of the centuries-old fishing area, Port des Pêcheurs. Spot a wealth of marine life and learn about the city’s whaling history at the Musée de la Mer. After your visit to the museum, cross the nearby footbridge to the Rocher de la Vierge to see a statue of the Virgin and Child and spectacular sunsets.

Enjoy Biarritz’s coastal walks. Just 25 minutes on foot from the Port Vieux is the Phare de Biarritz. Climb to the viewing deck of this lighthouse for unrivaled views of France’s Basque coastline.

Biarritz is known for its superb food scene. The city has several Michelin-starred restaurants but also offers more casual food experiences. Browse the stalls of Les Halles market for fresh fruits, vegetables and cheese. Sample handcrafted goodies on a tour of the Planète Musée du Chocolat.

Other museums in Biarritz include the Asiatica Musée d’Art Oriental and the Musée Historique de Biarritz.

Reach Biarritz by flying to Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne Airport, which is a 10-minute drive from the city centre. Get around Biarritz on foot or with the free shuttle bus. Whether you visit for a weekend break or summer holiday, it’s easy to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in Biarritz.

Beautiful place. Best bars and eateries are near the Halles. Plenty public transport options to go to other places of interest such as Bayonne, St Jean de Luz, San Sebastian, etc... And of course great for surfing. People in Biarritz are very nice.

People very friendly and helpful. Great food if a little expensive. Easy to get about on the bus. Train requires a little more effort. Atlantic coastline is very dramatic. Overall a great place to visit.
