South Chaoyang is a large neighborhood known for its theatrical show and progressive university campus. Its large park has lakes and traditional buildings for escape from the bustle of the immense metropolis of Beijing. Browse the many shops and commercial avenues and relax in the park.
If you’re looking for an entertaining evening, get tickets to the Golden Mask Dynasty Show at the OCT Theatre. This live dance performance is known for its incredible special effects, flamboyant costumes, intriguing storyline and acclaimed water scene.
Look around the Beijing University of Technology to learn what China’s future inventors and engineers are doing. The campus for the university’s 20,000 students has an enormous library among its many modern buildings.
For a change of scenery, relax on the green fields of Longtan Park. See its large Yuan Dushi’s Temple and enjoy the views of the picturesque Longtan Lake. Admire the many traditional Chinese buildings overlooking the water and venture into Longtan West Lake Park. Have a picnic in these green surroundings and forget the busy facets of city life.
A little southeast of the park is the Shilihe Culture Market, which offers a glimpse into local traditions. Browse various antiques, floral displays and jewelry on display. Visit the Wali Museum to learn about the customs of the Wali people, who have lived in this region for 500 years. Try the oily chicken and rice dish for local flavor.
Note that the name of the region translates to Facing the Sun. Summers here are hot and humid, while snow sometimes covers the ground in winter.
The district comprises a vast area along the eastern flank of Beijing. Fly to Beijing Capital International Airport and take the airport line and metro to the various stops in the region. Alternatively, rent a car and drive south from the airport for about 30 minutes, or up to 50 minutes in traffic, to reach the neighborhood.
With its impressive university and wonderful shows, South Chaoyang is a hub of art, performance and innovation.
