Skyrail Rainforest Cableway takes you on a journey over the pristine World Heritage-listed tropical rain forest north of Cairns. Glass-encased gondolas ferry up to six people at a time over the canopy, above Barron Gorge and down into the rain forest. The rail spans 7.5 kilometres (4.6 miles) and takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours return.
The Skyrail starts and ends at Caravonica Terminal, about 15 minutes’ drive from Cairns. The second stop is Red Peak Station, deep in the rain forest. Get out here to take a short boardwalk through ferns and palm trees. Signs provide you with information on the surrounding ecosystem.
The approach to the third stop provides spectacular views of Barron Gorge. The rugged landscape is framed by peaks and lined with lush rain forest home to waterfalls and ancient trees. Walk from Barron Falls Station to several nearby lookouts that offer photo opportunities across the gorge. A Rainforest Interpretation Centre here has visual and hands-on presentations about the surrounding national parks. You also take a Djabugay Aboriginal Guided Tour, which offers insight into Aboriginal history, culture, traditions and local stories.
The final station is in Kuranda, the “Village in the Rainforest” that’s well known for its markets and art galleries. Wander around the town to pick up souvenirs and stop for refreshments at cafés and restaurants.
Tickets for the Skyrail can be booked as one-way or return trips, and prices vary accordingly. There’s a discount for families, and children under four ride for free. Receive a five percent discount if you book online from the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway website. Book tickets in advance to secure a departure time and avoid waiting in lines.
The Skyrail is open every day except Christmas Day. There are ample parking spaces at the Caravonica Terminal. Skyrail also operates a pick-up and drop-off coach service from accommodation in and around Cairns, Port Douglas and the surrounding beaches
